What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction, also called Spiritual Companioning, is an ancient practice of speaking about and listening to someone’s relationship with the Holy One.
It enables a person to articulate how Spirit may or may not be present to them, helping one to become more attentive, as well as provide a place to question and search without judgment.
There are a multitude of reasons to have spiritual direction. For some, a longing or hunger for the Divine in their life may propel them to speak to a director. Feelings of spiritual emptiness, unconnectedness, restlessness, anger, the realization that one’s childhood faith is no longer enough, or the unease resulting from their idea of Ultimate Truth no longer fitting in the box one has built, are other reasons. Sometimes one might have a powerful experience of the Breath of Life, and need to discuss what has happened with someone who would understand.
Basically, the only requirement for spiritual direction is one’s desire and openness to discuss, explore, or grow in intimacy with the Other.
You, the directee, decide what to discuss. Whatever is going on in your life is the entranceway for us to explore together where the Source of All Energy is taking initiative, and what your responses are. As director, I allow time and space for discussion, reflection and prayer.
Direction is not counseling or psychotherapy. It concentrates on the journey, rather than an end result.
Who are Spiritual Directors?
Directors have completed professional training and are certified. They understand different spiritualities, and can suggest alternate prayer forms.
From all faith traditions, directors are located around the world, helping others see where God/Goddess is alive and moving in their everyday circumstances.
REFLECTION
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.
